Project History
Suburban Square shopping center, located along
Pennsylvania’s Main Line, opened for business in 1928.
The center soon contained a Strawbridge and Clothier
department store, and marked the first “suburban”
location for a major retailer.
Originally designed by Dreher and Churchman, the center
shops share a uniform aesthetic. Unlike many other “malls”
of the time, which consisted of one large building housing
numerous shops, Suburban Square was modeled after
a downtown street, and could be expanded by adding
new streets and “blocks of merchants. Today, seventy five
years after opening, Suburban Square is still expanding
and improving.
