Project History
This old mill’s original facade was to be repaired
retaining all of its charm and aesthetic appeal.
The five-storey structure had a conventionally reinforced
concrete frame with masonry infill below the window
openings. Over the years the concrete surface covering
the steel reinforcing had carbonated allowing widespread
atmospheric corrosion. Once the sandblasting of the
masonry and concrete surfaces had been completed
all surfaces to be repaired were treated with a single
component water-based consolidant before placement
of the repair mortar. Several application methods were
used at that stage, on the 30 foot sills to a depth of
6 inches a form and pump technique was the method
of choice. Smaller repairs used form and pour to avoid
placement in lifts, shallow areas were trowel applied.
After the repair mortar was placed, all surfaces were
finished with a cement-based resurfacing mortar and
two coats of breathable acrylic elastomeric coating.
